The Histology Technician is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory procedures related to the processing and analysis of tissue samples for dermatological diagnoses. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, strong technical skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Tissue Processing:
- Receive and accession tissue specimens, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
- Perform routine histological procedures, including tissue embedding, sectioning, staining (e.g., H&E, special stains), and coverslipping.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all procedures performed.
- Quality Control:
- Ensure the quality and accuracy of all histological preparations.
- Perform quality control checks at various stages of the processing and staining process.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment, including microtomes, embedding stations, and staining machines.
- Assist with the installation and troubleshooting of new equipment.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Comply with all relevant laboratory accreditation standards (e.g., CLIA).
- Other Duties as Assigned:
- Assist with other laboratory tasks as needed, such as inventory management, equipment maintenance, and training of new staff.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree in Histotechnology or a related field preferred.
- Experience: 1-2 years of experience as a Histology Technician in a clinical or research setting preferred.
- Skills:
- Strong technical skills in histological techniques, including tissue processing, sectioning, and staining.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate records.
- Other:
- Experience with dermatopathology preferred.
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations and safety protocols preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
